Bio - Julie Pujol Karel
Julie a Cuban- American, is the author of 13 poetry books and 1 short story book. Her work is written in English, Spanish and bilingual books. She has curated 9 anthology books for her group Conversing Through Poetry.
She wrote her first poem on a plane while leaving Cuba, in search of liberty, on the way to America. Since then and unbeknownst to her family, she would wright her poetry and hide it away in a box. Many years later, when she retired and moved to Texas, she gathered those poems and started to digitize 30+ years of poetry. Finally with the help of her daughter, she published her first Book "Imposible Olvidar". Julie also founded the poetry group Conversing Through Poetry (CPT) in Houston, Texas.
In 2022 BIPOC Banf Awarded her a grant under the umbrella of Nuestra Palabra. Was granted the honor of Literature Ambassador by the Statistic and Geography Academy, Mexico City. LULAC recognized her work in 2021. Casa Cuba with Orgullo Cubano and others awards for human rights essays, and for poetry. In 2021, was given the City of Houston Proclamation of March 8, 2021, as Julie Pujol Karel Day, by Mayor Silvester Turner for her overall accomplishments and achievements in the arts. She served as the In - House Poet, presented a series of bohemians (poets acting the word), and held a CTP group, at TBH from 2016-2019. Servant Leader Award by TBH. Prior, Julie has served as a program coordinator for the arts at the Hispanic Institute of Culture for two terms consecutives 2011-2013 and served as the official secretary.
Directed the Hispanic Book Festival of Houston from 2011-2013 after the passing of Andres Puello.
